Heart disease has consistently been the second leading cause of death in Canada for over two decades. Although the number of deaths per year remains high, its percentage of total deaths has gradually declined from 25.3% in 2000 to 17.7% in 2023, reflecting shifting patterns in Canadian mortality.
Between 2000 and 2023, annual deaths from heart disease ranged between 47,000 and 59,000, with 57,890 deaths reported in 2023. While the total number of deaths fluctuated, the overall trend shows a decrease in its relative share of national mortality, likely influenced by improved medical interventions, public awareness, and preventive care.
Despite these improvements, heart disease remains a major public health concern, accounting for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in Canada. Continued efforts in heart health education, access to care, and chronic disease prevention are essential to reducing this burden further.
