Total number of employed persons from 1980 to 2025
Employment can be defined using national standards, the ILO harmonized definition, or the OECD harmonized definition. It includes individuals who, during a specified short period (e.g., a week or a day):
(a) worked for a wage or salary, either in cash or in kind;
(b) were formally attached to a job but temporarily absent during the reference period;
(c) engaged in work for profit or family gain, in cash or in kind; or
(d) were associated with an enterprise (e.g., business, farm, or service) but were temporarily not working for specific reasons during the reference period.
