Teen Births in New Brunswick Drop Significantly Over 30 Years

Between 1991 and 2023, New Brunswick saw a dramatic decline in the percentage of births to mothers aged 15 to 19. In 1991, teen mothers accounted for 9.4% of all live births. By 2023, that number had dropped to just 2.2%. This shift reflects broader national trends toward delayed motherhood, driven by education, career priorities, and increased access to reproductive health resources.

Growth in Maternal Age: More Women Giving Birth in Their 30s and 40s

Mothers aged 30 to 34 have become the most common age group for childbirth in New Brunswick. This group grew from 20.5% in 1991 to 34.2% in 2023. Similarly, births to mothers aged 35 to 39 have more than tripled, from 5.0% to 15.2%, while the share for ages 40 to 44 grew from 0.5% to 2.9%.

Young Adult Births (20–29) Still Substantial but Declining

Although still prominent, births to women aged 20 to 24 and 25 to 29 have steadily decreased. In 1991, they made up 27% and 37.6% of all births, respectively. By 2023, those numbers declined to 13.7% and 31.7%, indicating a shift toward older maternal age.
